Conference Description

The summer 2020 uprisings in the United States, and subsequent movements globally, have recentered dialogues around racism and fueled efforts to address its implications for wellbeing. As a result, many fields have been challenged to expand their analysis of — and interventions on — racial inequity to include individual, interpersonal, institutional, and structural manifestations. But what are the relationships between these factors? How are they navigated across fields? And how might this inform interdisciplinary efforts to do this work?

In this inaugural IDEAL Provostial Fellows conference, scholars of racism from throughout the country and across disciplines will gather to discuss what racial justice should look like, interrogating perspectives from the interpersonal to the structural. The conference will host a keynote speech by Dr. Claude Steele followed by panel sessions focused on how racism manifests across systems, its downstream consequences, and efforts toward intervention.

Interdisciplinary panels will address the following topics:

  • Projects of racial justice/inclusion: Lessons from history
  • Mobilizing Research for Community-Driven Change: Examinations of Asian America for Justice
  • Punishment as a Tool of Structural Racism: Materializing Ideology through Policy and Practice
  • Perpetuating Inequality in Pursuit of Diversity?: How valuing diversity’s benefits might undermine racial inequality.
  • Racialization across space and time
