Equity and Inclusion Programs and Resources

OFDDE seeks to advance, equity, inclusion and belonging at Stanford through a number of initiatives and activities; some that are directly tied to the university-wide IDEAL initiative and others that are built into the mission of the office. Here you will find programs and resources for faculty members who seek to learn more about creating inclusive and welcoming environments in classrooms, labs, departments and units. 

Faculty Diversity Council Formed in 2019, the Faculty Diversity Council (FDC) meets quarterly with Vice Provost Matt Snipp to advise him on programs and issues related to faculty recruitment and retention within their school

Presidents Awards for Excellence Through Diversity Students, staff and faculty of the Stanford Community are invited to submit nominations for the President’s Awards for Excellence through Diversity. These awards honor individuals and programs that have made exceptional contributions to enhancing and supporting diversity (broadly defined) within the Stanford University community. The awards are intended to recognize that a diverse campus community enhances our institutional excellence by broadening and strengthening the university's mission of teaching, learning and scholarship.

Equity-Minded Leadership – Canvas Course

(for Stanford department chairs, academic leaders and faculty members)

The video modules and materials in this course on Equity-Minded Leadership have been provided by the Faculty Advancement Network for use by its member institutions. The Equity-Minded Leadership series covers a number of topics including faculty service and workload, faculty recruitment and hiring, mentoring, graduate education, and culture and climate. Leading scholars in these areas are featured, including: Estela Mara Bensimon, Ph.D.; Kimberly Griffin, Ph.D.; KerryAnn O’Meara, Ph.D.; and Damani White-Lewis, Ph.D. Click here for the self-registration link.

CREATEngagement Toolkit

This online guide provides an overview of five characteristics of a positive department climate for faculty members. These provide a framework to consider the current climate within a unit and identify strengths and challenges in order to plan for improvement. Modules in this toolkit include information about the role of the department chair and the role of faculty members in creating a positive department climate. The five characteristics of an engaging climate for faculty and staff are also discussed:  collaboration, respect, equity, assistance and transparency. Creating Inclusive Spaces of Belonging

Materials are available for departments to conduct their own workshops using videos, instructor guides and participant materials developed from the Berkeley Interactive Theater workshop, “Creating Inclusive Spaces of Belonging”. Two one-hour modules are available for faculty members or committees within a department to engage department members in discussion around beneficial and harmful micro-messages in classroom and lab environments. Faculty Anti-Bias Training Resources

These materials were developed in consultation with a committee of faculty members and administrators from four schools ( Earth, Energy and Environmental Sciences; Education; Engineering; Humanities & Sciences) and the Center for Teaching and Learning.

The guides listed below provide background material, definitions, links to websites, videos, self-assessments and tools that can be used to customize meeting agendas and workshops. In addition, individuals may also use these materials for self-study.
