Main content start

Materialities of Race
2nd IDEAL PROVOSTIAL FELLOWS CONFERENCE
Thursday and Friday, October 12-13, 2023

In tension with the tendencies that mistakenly interpret the insight that race is socially constructed as also asserting that race is immaterial, Resisting the draw of purely abstract representations of racial politics, “Materialities of Race” focuses on the various ways that race is transmuted from a theoretical abstraction into a concrete thing across diverse social worlds. This conference brings together leading scholars from multiple fields and disciplines to explore how race is produced and maintained through material formations. Featuring interdisciplinary and comparative approaches and methods, panels will explore the intersections of race, materiality, and power through embodiment, differential health outcomes, dispossession of territory and resources, risk assessment, and various other aspects of our physical and concrete realities.
